The Arrivals Legacy Project Seedpool: Calling Our Ancestors Home (What Will Come from the Ashes?)

As an alumnus of the Arrivals Legacy Project Workshop, I was asked to apply to the Arrivals Legacy Project Seedpool ‘Calling Our Ancestors Home’ residency program in the Spring of 2023. The Seedpool ‘Calling Our Ancestors Home’ was an extension of The Arrivals Legacy Project Workshop. It provides alumni of the workshops the opportunity to continue their personal journeys with their ancestors and to tap even further into their cultural histories.

Participants of the residencies are asked to create a short/small work of art that speaks to the memory of ‘a compelling moment’ in their recent or distant past that relates specifically to their ancestry or to the ancestor they worked with in the Arrivals Legacy Project Workshop. These short/small works of art are called ‘seeds’,  the ‘seed’ being an idea, or a glimpse of a possible larger work of art that might take off in the future. Participants are asked to answer a set of questions that describes the ‘compelling moment’, and how this moment relates to their ‘seed’ idea.  The ‘seeds’ can be presented in a multitude of media (performance or dance video clips, drawings, photographs, musical recordings, songs, or experimental videos, etc.).  All ‘seeds’ are then uploaded to the Arrivals Legacy Project website. Each participant has their own profile page on which to upload their ‘seeds’ so that others can witness them.

From here participants are encouraged to respond to another participant’s ‘seed’ on the site by creating their own work of art based on the other participant’s work. This call-to-action helps motivate all the alumni participants to continue their work thus keeping their ancestral legacies alive.

The following work (seed) was submitted to the Arrivals Legacy Project Seedpool in March of 2023.  A full description of the seed idea can be found on my profile page on the Arrivals Legacy Project website. Please visit the site by clicking on the URL link below.
